ANIMAL ACUPUNCTURE

I am delighted to announce the expansion of my acupuncture practice to include animals.  Recently, I completed a four month didactic and clinical program in Animal Acupuncture sponsored by Tai Sophia Institute for the Healing Arts and approved by the Maryland Board of Acupuncture.  The course was taught by veterinarian acupuncturists along with superb Certified Animal Acupuncturists practicing in Maryland.

My Dog as Teacher

McKenna and CarolWhen I was an acupuncture student I had no intentions of treating animals. I adore dogs but never imagined having them as patients. I took an acupuncture theory class taught by Noreen Javornick, an acupuncturist who treated humans and animals.  I have benefited greatly from receiving acupuncture so I wanted to give the same health benefits to my beloved McKenna.  At that time, he was a healthy ten year old golden retriever/lab mix and I wanted him to stay that way.  Acupuncture has helped him tremendously as he has aged and developed some hind-end weakness.  At nearly 15, he is doing quite well for an “old guy”.

McKenna’s first acupuncture treatment was a moving experience for me to witness.  He got very relaxed, his breathing changed, his eyes brightened, his coat seemed more lustrous.  At the end of the treatment, he got up, shook off and was ready for some special treats that Noreen offers her furry patients.  At his second visit, he jumped out of the car and went right over to Noreen’s office door!

mckennaMcKenna continues to receive acupuncture regularly.  He recently had a stroke and was treated immediately with acupuncture and homeopathy.  Within less than 12 hours, he was nearly back to 100%.  I am grateful to McKenna for expanding my world in so many ways.  He is my teacher and role model for how to be happy every day. It is because of him that I have the honor of working with animals.
I thank McKenna for showing me this path

What conditions are treated with acupuncture?
As a preventive medicine/health promotion system of healing, acupuncture can help to keep your dog healthy and boost his immune system.

Acupuncture has been effective in treating:

  • Arthritis
  • Musculoskeletal issues (hip pain/dysplasia, lameness)
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Behavioral problems (calm fears and ease separation anxiety)
  • Digestive issues (diarrhea/constipation)
  • Urinary problems
  • Recovery from injuries/surgeries
  • Transitions into a new home or changes in their environment
  • Other physical or emotional issues that may be causing unnecessary suffering for you and your pet

REQUIREMENT
Prior to your animal’s first acupuncture appointment, they must be seen by a veterinarian.  This can be a wellness visit, vaccine, blood work, etc.  This vet appointment must be within fourteen days of my seeing your animal for acupuncture.   A vet receipt must be brought to your initial appointment before  I can legally treat your dog.  This is the law in Maryland.

APPOINTMENTS
mckennaInitial consultations are 45 minutes; regular appointments are 30minutes. When first beginning treatment, it is recommended that your dog is seen weekly for 3-4 weeks. The frequency of treatment is unique to your animal’s health issue.  After evaluating your animal’s response to treatment and progress, we will decide how best to space out appointments to support the healing process.
